SUMMARY:Bird-Friendly Westerville at the Farmer's Market
DESCRIPTION:Bird-Friendly Westerville – Grant Received from Columbus Audubon\n\nWhat started as a “Passion Project” has turned into a successful grant proposal\nand a new initiative for Sustainable Westerville! Kristen Bourdage and Susan\nStauffer proposed that Sustainable Westerville apply for a Columbus Audubon\nConservation Grant in December and it was successful! They were joined by Lois\nSzudy and Bethany Vosburg-Bluem to form a committee to make this project a\nreality. This proposal seeks to promote bird conservation and increase awareness\nof bird-friendly habitat practices in the City of Westerville and its surrounding\ncommunities of Northeast Columbus\, Ohio (e.g.\, Blendon Township). The\nproposed project\, Bird-Friendly Westerville: Building Backyard Bird Sanctuaries\nwith Education builds on the existing strengths of a community characterized by\nmostly single-family homes with backyard spaces while leveraging the visibility\,\ncredibility\, and community reach of Sustainable Westerville (SW). The\noverarching goal of the project is to engage residents in creating and enhancing\nbackyard habitats that support local and migratory bird populations.\n\nOur objectives are:\n• Enhance backyard habitats that support local and migratory bird populations with food bearing\nshrubs and flowers\n• Promote bird conservation\n• Influence birding hobbies\n\nWe are in the process of purchasing approximately 125 native shrubs from Patty Shipley at Leaves for Wildlife in Sunbury. These plants will be given away to people who visit the Westerville Farmers Market on May 16\, 23\, 30\, and June 6.\nBird-Friendly Westerville Needs Your Help!\nWe hope you will join us in continuing the native plant give-away that started last year with the Westerville Pollinator Pathway. While these shrubs were chosen for their ability to support birds\, they also help other pollinators.\n\n• Would you like to assist people plant a native shrub in their yard? You can by joining the Plant\nCrew: sign-up for the plant crew. Or use:\nhttps://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSc7qbrWZdloXQ…/viewform\n(may need to copy and paste link)
