Uptown Westerville Inc. honored supporters, volunteers and business members with its 2025 Awards Program Tuesday, Feb. 25.

About 60 people gathered for the awards program Tuesday morning in the third-floor banquet room at Uptown’s Old Bag of Nails, 24 S. State St., as part of UWI’s Annual Meeting. Award winners were presented with a 2025 UWI medallion “challenge coin” – pictured above.

Community Partner Award

Westerville Division of Police

The Westerville Police Division was presented with a 2025 Community Partner Award, “for its unwavering dedication to keeping our community safe. Their expertise in securing large events — strategically assessing and protecting potential entry points, coordinating security efforts, and prioritizing public safety — ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all,” said UWI Executive Director Lynn Aventino. “Their commitment gives us confidence that our community is in the best hands. Thank you, WPD, for your partnership and service!” Aventino said.

Assistant Police Chief Brian Spoon accepted the award on the Division’s behalf.

Westerville Public Service Department

The Westerville Public Service Department was honored with a second 2025 Community Partner Award from UWI. “For their incredible work behind the scenes at our largest events, we are thrilled to present a Community Partner Award to the Westerville Service Department, Aventino said. “From placing barricades and managing street closures to handling massive trash clean-up efforts, their dedication ensures a seamless experience for all. Their efficiency is truly remarkable. Just like Disney, within 30 minutes of an event’s end, it’s as if it never happened! Their hard work keeps our streets safe, clean, and welcoming, and we are so grateful for their partnership. Thank you for all that you do! “ she said.

UWI Board member and Westerville Economic Development Administrator Rob Rishel accepted the award on behalf of Public Service Department Superintendent Eric Voll.

Uptown Business of the Year

Westerville Florist

“We are proud to recognize Westerville Florist as our Uptown Business of the Year,” Aventino announced. “Under the leadership of Candice Martini, the business has flourished — not only as a beloved floral shop but as a hub for community connection Uptown.

“Her creation of The Giving Room has fostered collaborations with fellow Uptown businesses, with proceeds supporting local charities. Beyond her business, Candice’s passion for service shines through her role on the Uptown Westerville Inc. Board of Directors and as Chair of the inaugural Uptown Business Relations Committee.

“Her dedication to community and collaboration makes her truly deserving of this honor. Congratulations, Candice and Westerville Florist!” Aventino said.

Board Member of the Year

Mike Deringer, Amish Originals

“We are honored to recognize Mike Deringer as our Board Member of the Year,” Aventino said. “Mike has dedicated six years to serving on the Uptown Westerville Inc. Board of Directors, and as he terms out, we reflect on the incredible impact he has made. His unwavering support, leadership, and passion for Uptown have been invaluable.

“As an owner of Amish Originals, Mike has been pivotal to the success of our largest fundraiser, Uptown Untapped. His hands-on leadership, planning, and idea generation continue to ensure its success. His calm and steady presence during the event is invaluable,” Aventino said.

“Beyond Uptown Untapped, Mike is always ready to lend a hand. Whether it’s supporting community events, contributing to special projects, or offering thoughtful guidance, his dedication is appreciated and his impact on Uptown Westerville will be felt for years to come,” she added.

“Thank you, Mike, for your years of service, generosity, and commitment to our community!”

Greater Westerville Area Businesses of the Year

Newman Roofing and Nationwide Children’s Hospital also were recognized by Aventino with UWI annual awards Feb. 25.

“We are proud to honor Newman Roofing and Nationwide Children’s Hospital as our Greater Westerville Area Businesses of the Year,” Aventino announced. “Their steadfast support as sponsors has been instrumental in fostering a vibrant and thriving community by making Uptown’s signature events possible.

Through their generosity year after year, we are able to offer free, accessible events that bring art, culture, music, and entertainment to the entire community. These events not only create shared experiences and lasting memories but also contribute to the economic vitality of Uptown — aligning with Westerville City Council’s vision for a dynamic and flourishing business district,” she said.

“Their commitment to the community extends far beyond sponsorship. It’s about creating spaces where people can come together, celebrate, and experience all that Uptown has to offer. Thank you, Newman Roofing and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, for your incredible support and dedication to Westerville,” Aventino said.
